Predicting Upwelling Radiance on the West Florida Shelf
نویسنده
چکیده
The prediction of inherent optical properties [IOPs] and water-leaving radiance [Lw] in coastal waters over a 5 to 10 day time horizon will require a numerical simulation that accurately forecasts the physical, ecological, and optical environment. Critical to the ecological and optical forecast is the ability to directly compare the water-leaving radiance field to those being collected by aircraft and satellite platforms. Our goal is to develop the ecological and optical models and computer codes to initialize, validate, and predict the IOPs and Lw over an operational time horizon.

Ocean Currents and Sea Surface Heights Estimated across the West Florida Shelf
The across-shelf structures of the ocean circulation and the associated sea surface height (SSH) variability are examined on the west Florida shelf (WFS) for the 3-yr interval from September 1998 to December 2001. Five sets of characteristic circulation patterns are extracted from 2-day, low-pass-filtered data using the self-organizing map: extreme upwelling and downwelling structures with stro...
متن کاملDefining and Dividing the Greater Caribbean: Insights from the Biogeography of Shorefishes
The Greater Caribbean biogeographic region is the high-diversity heart of the Tropical West Atlantic, one of four global centers of tropical marine biodiversity. The traditional view of the Greater Caribbean is that it is limited to the Caribbean, West Indies, southwest Gulf of Mexico and tip of Florida, and that, due to its faunal homogeneity, lacks major provincial subdivisions. In this scena...
متن کاملMultiple regression models of δC and δN for fish populations in the eastern Gulf of Mexico
Multiple regression models were created to explain spatial and temporal variation in the δC and δN values of fish populations on the West Florida Shelf (eastern Gulf of Mexico, USA). Extensive trawl surveys from three time periods were used to acquire muscle samples from seven groundfish species. Isotopic variation (δCvar and δNvar) was calculated as the deviation from the isotopic mean of each...
متن کاملThe spectral upwelling radiance distribution in optically shallow waters
The upwelling radiance distribution in optically shallow water is investigated with experiments and Hydrolight numerical simulations for two different benthic surfaces and a range of solar zenith angles (,608). Over a bright sand surface (water depth 5 m) the upwelling radiance distribution was brightest at nadir and decreased toward the horizon. The upwelling radiance distribution was nearly a...

The three-dimensional circulation on the continental shelf off northern California in the WEST (Wind Events and Shelf Transport) experiment region during summer 2001 is studied using the primitive equation Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). The simulations are performed with realistic topography and initial stratification in a limited-area domain with a high-resolution grid. Forcing consist...
